About the McCord School of Nursing

McCord Hospital Founder, Dr James McCord,  was passionate about developing and training local nurses,  having first trained a group of four women in 1910. The McCord School of Nursing was formally established in 1924 and has grown steadily, graduating an average of 190 nurses annually in recent years.

With its strong focus on education and training of healthcare workers over eight decades, McCord has produced a number of high profile leaders and successful health professionals, and has contributed substantially toward the development of health systems, training curricula, and healthcare professions in South Africa and further afield. McCord-trained nurses are in high demand and are widely recognized for their dedication to service excellence and patient care, and on graduation, most go on to careers in the public healthcare sector. Many McCord-trained nurses have become Directors of Nursing in hospitals across Southern Africa.  An example being Professor Philda Nzimande (nee Ndlovu), the first black nurse to be awarded a doctorate by UNISA, and one of the first black Professors of Nursing in South Africa.

McCord fosters an active learning environment that encourages those in training, as well as in permanent positions, to further develop their skills, abilities, and leadership potential. The concept of lifelong learning as part of a career is embraced at McCord, and is evidenced by the number of people who are engaged in further study and research projects.

Two of the South African Nursing Council accredited nurse training programs were initially developed through the McCord School of Nursing.

Nursing Courses Offered

The school offers four major programmes:  

1. Enrolled Nurse (E/N) programme (Centralised)
2. Basic Midwifery Course (Centralised)
3. Bridging Course (leading to registration as a Professional Nurse) (Decentralised)
4. Primary Health Care (Decentralised)

Courses are accredited by the South African Nursing Council (SANC) and are approved by South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA), with reference to the National Qualifications framework (NQF).   Three of the courses have external examinations set by SANC. The curriculum is reviewed periodically and regularly enhanced/improved/updated according to the relevant needs of the public. The strategies of delivery are updated so as to enhance critical thinking, problem solving and produce independent decision makers.  Strategies of evaluation elicit all the above-mentioned components.  The delivery is through a block system combined with day release to maximize teacher/learner contact. Evaluation is carried out in the form of formative and summative evaluation as well as OSCE - thus ensuring integration of theory and practice.

The Nurse Educators / Tutors are all counsellors and can thus mentor their students both academically and personally on the often gruelling and challenging course of study. Psychological support is available from the McCord Hospital Psychology Department when required. The mentorship is supported by the spiritual upliftment through regular prayer meetings, and deeper spiritual substance is nurtured by the hospital Pastor. At examination time, special services are held by Pastors to support the students as they prepare for their examinations.

In 2011, the McCord School of Nursing Bursary Programme was launched, with one deserving but cash-strapped nursing student becoming the recipient of a bursary for her second year of studies. The Bursary Programme will be gradually expanded over 2011 and 2012 to provide bursary opportunities to passionate and deserving second year McCord School of Nursing students who do not have the financial means to continue their studies.
