HIV Care Services at McCord Hospital

McCord's Response to the HIV Pandemic

Through the Hospital’s internationally recognized Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT) Programme, in which HIV care is integrated into standard antenatal care, the rate of mother-to-child transmission of HIV during the period 2005–2010 has been reduced to less than 3% compared to 18 - 20% in most other settings.  A pioneering program aimed at retaining mother-infant pairs in long term care after delivery was implemented in 2008:  the Mamanengane Clinic provides ongoing HIV care for mother-infant pairs, for eighteen months, after which the mother and child are referred either to Sinikithemba or their local clinic for ongoing care.
