Preventing Mother to Child Transmission

McCord Hospital’s Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT) programme has, over the last 6 years, recorded a MTCT transmission of <3%. It is the programme of choice for pregnant, HIV-positive women and their partners. Treatment protocols have evolved over the last 6 years and are informed by local and international experience, research and best practice guidelines. Currently HIV-positive pregnant women, enrolled in the Sinikithemba ART programme or those seeking obstetric care at McCord Hospital, are given comprehensive PMTCT care and treatment with antiretroviral treatment initiated either for the women’s own health (CD4<350) or for PMTCT purposes (CD4>350). The McCord PMTCT programme also includes a postnatal clinic providing comprehensive follow-up care of both mothers and their infants for 18 months. The clinic offers the following services: primary health care, immunizations, comprehensive HIV care (CD4 monitoring, OI prevention and treatment) initiation and monitoring of HAART, HIV testing for infants at 6 weeks and 18 months, infant growth and developmental assessments, infant feeding monitoring, psychosocial support, cervical screening and family planning.
