On Saturday 29 May, the bottom car park at McCord Hospital was alive with activity as the inaugural Sponsor a Child’s HIV Care Party took place. McCord’s Sinikithemba (‘give us hope’) holistic HIV care programme welcomes sponsors for children and adults who cannot afford care. One such sponsor is Lauren Cohen, from the USA, who, along with support from her friends and family members, sponsors 65 children’s HIV care. With the children and their caregivers in full attendance, the crowd enjoyed a jumping castle, face painting and balloon blowing by a clown, games of Twister, performances by a the Connection Zulu Choir and a dance group run by one of the sponsored youth. Bafana Bafana t-shirts, a soccer ball, and other World Cup paraphernalia were some of the prizes given away to children in dance, singing and modelling competitions. The day was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
